Hello! We hope everyone had a nice weekend! This week, Ms. Malakoff and Ms. Cox are continuing our bullying prevention/Habit 1: Be Proactive classroom guidance lessons. This week, we are going into Second Grade and Third Grade classrooms. In Second Grade, we are reading the book The Juice Box Bully. This books discusses the importance of standing up for others and be an UPstander. After reading and discussing the book, students are making their own juice boxes and writing how they can stop bullying. For example, standing up for someone or telling a teacher. In Third Grade, we are reading the book Simon's Hook. This book discusses teasing and putdowns. Simon, the main character, learns a very important lesson about how to deal with bullying from his Grandma Rose. After reading and discussing the book, we discuss what to do "instead of biting," meaning instead of letting the teasing/putdown get to you. The five things to do instead of "biting" are the following: 1. Do LIttle or Nothing (Don't React) 2. Agree with the Hook 3. Distract the fishermen (Change the Subject) 4. Laugh or Make a Joke 5. Stay Away from the hooks (swim in another part of the sea) In other news, please don't forget that Monday, October 17 is the deadline to submit ONLY FIFTH GRADE GIFTED REFERRAL FORMS. We will NOT accept any referrals after October 17. Community/Family Opportunities:

Hello! We hope everyone is having a wonderful week! Last week, Ms. Malakoff and Ms. Cox went into Kindergarten and Fourth Grade classes for a classroom guidance lesson. This week, we have been going into First Grade and Fifth Grade. This month's classroom guidance lesson topic is Habit 1: Be Proactive and how that ties into October's National Bullying Prevention Month. We are emphasizing to students the importance of the definition of bullying and the different types of bullying (verbal, physical, and cyber). We also spoke about how it is only called bullying if someone does something over and over again (at least 2-3 times). We spoke about the importance of being an UPstander (sticking up for yourself or someone being bullied) and not being a BYstander (someone who does not do anything when they see or are a victim of bullying). Ms. Malakoff and Ms. Cox discussed the importance of sticking up for yourself/someone, walking away if necessary, or telling an adult if you feel you or someone else is being bullied. Bullying Prevention ties into Habit 1: Be Proactive because being proactive means taking accountability for your own action's and choices. Everyone is responsible for making good choices and showing kindness to others! In Kindergarten, we read to students the book Recess Queen. Recess Queen is about a new student who dethrones the reigning recess bully by becoming her friend. After discussing the book, students drew a picture to show how they are a good friend! In First Grade, we watched the video version of the book Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns about Bullies. This is a wonderful short video that tells the story about how Howard keeps being bullied by two other students, and he doesn't know what to do. Howard learns to "BE BOLD, BE BRAVE, A TEACHER MUST BE TOLD." In Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade, we read the book Each Kindness. This is a wonderful book about a new girl named Maya who tries join and become friends with others in her class, but her classmates judge her based on her clothes, what she looks like, and what she eats for lunch. Every time Maya tries to join the other students, they reject and ignore her. The teacher, Ms. Albert, gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world and one of the particular students begins to regret and think about how she should have cheated the new student. discussing how one simple act of kindness can go out and spread into the world. After the book, we created our own "kindness pond," and each student had to say one way they show kindness. Afterwards, each student had to say a compliment to the student next to them to illustrate the importance of kind actions, and how nice it can make a person feel! We will be conducting Second Grade and Third Grade classroom lessons on Bullying Prevention/Habit 1 next week. The past two weeks, Ms. Malakoff and Ms. Cox have enjoyed going into every class introducing ourselves and explaining the role of a school counselor. We also met with students in Grades 1-5 new to CHES just like us! We have one more group to do this week, and then we will have had lunch with every new student to CHES! It has been great getting to know every Clover! Please don't forget to check out the SILENCE HURTS FORM on the webpage. This form allows you as a parent or student to fill out anonymously (if you so choose) an unkind behavior you are a witness or victim of. Ms. Malakoff, Ms. Cox, and administration are the only ones who see the responses to this form. Next week, we are looking forward to going into Kindergarten and Fourth Grade classes for classroom guidance lessons. The topic for all grade levels in late September to October is Leader in Me's Habit 1: Being Proactive. We will be talking about how to prevent bullying in honor of Bullying Prevention Month. *Small Groups will not start until late October/early November. Community/Family Opportunities:
